step 1: position of house and color.
1. house #2: blue. it's next to the norwegian house (house #1)
2. house #4: green. it's to the left of the white house. since house #3 drinks milk, and green drinks tea, it can't be #3.
3. house #5: white. it's to the right of the green.
4. house #3: red. brit lives in red. the norwegian already lives in house #1.
5. house #1: yellow. process of elimination

step 2: fill in the gap
house #1: norwegian, smokes dunhill
house #3: brit, drinks milk
house #4: drinks coffee
house #2: has a horse

here is where most people get stuck because there are two scenarios

scenario 1: This won't work because that leaves 2 nationality fighting for house #4
house #2: drinks beer, BlueMasters
house #5: Dane, drinks tea

scenario 2: This scenario works.
house #2: Dane, drinks tea
house #5: drinks beer, smokes BlueMaster

therefore:
house #4: German, smokes Prince (since house 5 smokes BlueMaster)
house #5: Swede, has dog
house #2: smokes Blend (hint #15)
house #1: drinks water, has cat
house #3: smokes PallMall (deduction), has birds

That leaves the german with no pet!
